Phnom Penh, April 3, 2024 – In a significant transition within Cambodia's political landscape, the former Prime Minister Hun Sen was unanimously elected as President of the Senate this morning, marking a new chapter in his distinguished career. After an illustrious tenure spanning 43 years at the helm of the executive branch, Hun Sen resigned as Prime Minister on August 21, 2023, making way for a new generation of leadership.

Stepping down from his role as a member of the National Assembly on April 2 to assume his responsibilities in the Senate, Hun Sen's election to the Senate's highest position was met with universal approval, receiving 62 out of 62 votes.

In his inaugural address as President of the Senate, Hun Sen extended his gratitude to the National Assembly members for their confidence in his leadership. He outlined his commitment to uphold democracy and the core values of Cambodian society, emphasizing the significance of "parliamentary diplomacy" amid the current global diplomatic challenges. Hun Sen articulated a vision to strengthen Cambodia's diplomatic ties through active dialogue and cooperation with regional and global parliaments. This approach, he noted, would complement the efforts of the Royal Government and the National Assembly, contributing significantly to global peace, security, stability, and prosperity.

Furthermore, Hun Sen highlighted his intent to prioritize relations with local governance structures, particularly commune councils, to foster democracy, justice, and social equity. He vowed to support the democratization process, modernization, reforms, and the decentralization and deconcentration efforts aimed at enhancing the quality and efficiency of public services. "We will continue to do our utmost to promote services of justice and equity, ensuring that all citizens live with dignity and freedoms protected by the Constitution," he affirmed.
